API 5L X42 pipe is also called L290 pipe (by ISO 3183). It is named by minimum API 5L X42 pipe yield strength 42100 Psi or 290 Mpa. API 5L X42 pipe has high resistance to cold, acid and industrial waste, like hydrogen sulphide and other highly corrosive environments. API 5L X42 pipe is mainly used in pipelines for oil and gas transmissions.

API 5L X42 pipe has two levels: API 5L X42 PSL1 and API 5L X42 PSL2, and the API 5L X42 pipe yield strength of different levels are not the same.
