What is the API 5L Grade B heat treatment?

The heat treatment process for API 5L Grade B is centered around improving the mechanical properties of the material, removing processing stresses and enhancing corrosion resistance.

1. Core purpose of heat treatment

The heat treatment of API 5L Grade B is aimed at optimizing its mechanical properties and ensuring the reliability of the pipe in high-pressure, corrosive environments. Specific objectives include:

Eliminate residual stresses after rolling/welding to prevent cracking and distortion.

Refine grain structure to improve material uniformity and toughness.

Adjust the yield strength and tensile strength to meet the minimum requirements of API 5L for Grade B (yield strength ≥ 245 MPa, tensile strength ≥ 415 MPa).

2. Main heat treatment process

According to the production method and application scenarios, the heat treatment of API 5L Grade B can be divided into the following two categories:

(1) Normalizing

Applicable objects: Seamless steel pipes (as described in webpage 7) and some welded pipes (such as PSL2 grade products).

Process parameters: Pipes are heated to austenitizing temperature (approx. 900-930°C) and subsequently air-cooled to room temperature.

Effect:

Increases the toughness and impact resistance of the material (e.g. 0°C impact work ≥ 40 J);

Ensure that the hardness of the welded area is consistent with the base material (especially in acidic environments need to be strictly controlled).

(2) Post-welding heat treatment (PWHT)

Applicable objects: Welded steel pipes (e.g. welded pipes produced by the ERW or SAW process).

Process parameters: localized tempering of the weld area (temperature of about 600-650 ℃) to eliminate residual stresses in the weld heat affected zone.

Effect:

Reduces weld hardness and prevents the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC);

Improves corrosion resistance, especially for acidic environments containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S).

3. Differences in heat treatment for different product specifications

API 5L Grade B adjusts the heat treatment requirements according to the product specification level (PSL1/PSL2):

PSL1: Usually no mandatory heat treatment is required (unless specifically requested by the customer), but basic mechanical properties need to be met.

PSL2: Normalizing is mandatory and the cooling rate must be controlled (as described on page 4, "Normalize before leaving the factory"), and the following tests must be added:

Hardness test (e.g. Brinell hardness ≤ 250 HB);

Charpy V-notch impact test (impact work at -10°C or lower).

4. Synergy with other processes

Heat treatment is often combined with other production processes:

Normalizing after hot rolling: In seamless steel tube production, normalizing after hot rolling can refine the grain and improve yield strength.

Cold Expansion + Annealing: Some cold expanded tubes need to be annealed to restore plasticity (e.g. "Hot Expansion + Heat Treatment" mentioned in page 7).

Surface treatment: sandblasting and coating (such as 3LPE anti-corrosion layer) are often applied after heat treatment to enhance corrosion resistance.

Summarize

The heat treatment process of API 5L Grade B is based on normalizing and post-weld tempering. The core of the heat treatment process is normalizing and post-weld tempering, and the material properties are optimized through temperature control and cooling rate adjustment. Its implementation is flexible depending on the type of product (seamless/welded), the application environment (conventional/acidic) and the grade (PSL1/PSL2). For pipes in sour service, heat treatment is a key component to avoid hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion failure.
